“Truly stunning”: Take Effect reviews Last

“Heartfelt violin playing” and “a truly stunning performance.”

Take Effect reviewed Last, Michael Torke’s twelve miniature slow movements for solo violin and string orchestra, recorded by Siwoo Kim with the East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO).

The review walks through the set: the stirring opening of “Last Fall,” with Siwoo’s “heartfelt violin playing,” the plucked strings of “Last Winter,” the intimacy of “Last Year,” and “Last Thursday,” which it names a highlight.

It hears in the music an invitation to live in the moment while answering to the past, close to what Torke himself says of the piece. Last is out on Ecstatic Records.
